The newfound friendship of PM Modi and US President Donald Trump has been widely discussed in the world press and social media and why not? Firstly, this was the first visit of PM Modi to the United States after the 2016 Presidential Election. The uncertainity in Indo-US relationship after Trump’s election as the President was removed once Trump and Modi joined hands for ‘peace, stability and security’. Trump in his speech in the White House that day termed India as a true friend and showed deep interest in strengthening bilateral ties and having a fair and reciprocal trading relationships. The highlight of his speech was his declaration to jointly fight radical islamic terrorism. He thanked the Indian people for their contributions to the effort in Afghanistan and joining the US in their application of new sanctions against the North Korean regime. He also thanked the Indian airlines for purchasing 100 American airplanes, one of the largest orders of its kind and further added that it would provide job oppurtunities for thousands of Americans.
PM Modi in his speech said that India is very keen in strengthening defence and economic relationships with the US. He assured to join hands with the US in destroying radical islamic terrorism and safe havens of terror. Stating US as a primary partner for India’s social and economic transformation, PM Modi said that an engagement towards increased productivity, growth, job creation and breakthrough technologies will add further momentum to this relationship. He also thanked Trump and the US government for their hospitality and termed his US trip fruitful.
According to media reports, the US has cleared the sale of 22 predator Guardian drones, a force multiplier that will boost the Indian Navy’s intelligence, surveillance and capabilities. Moresoever, The White House said that the United State offered to sell F-16 and F/A-18 fighter aircraft to India which would represent the most significant defence cooperation between the US and India to date.
This purchase by India has not only strengthened the Indian naval forces , but also brought new hopes for a progressive and terror-free India.
It will be interesting to see if the Trump – Modi meet , a significant event in the Indian and US history, will bring ‘acche din’ for India or will all the promises go null and void.
